Although their plan may have seemed perfect, there were actually a lot of mistakes they made. First of all, it was dark when they disposed the body and accidentally placed Frank upside down, therefore his feet were sticking out of the culvert and was very noticeable. That's how the body was discovered.

Second of all, Leopold had dropped his glasses nearby the body when they had disposed it. They were prescription glasses that only three people in Chicago had. It wasn't hard to track down Leopold after that. Leopold had told the cops that he was bird watching and that they must have fallen out of his pocket by accident. It was a reliable alibi, but the investigators still continued to search. In order for his alibi to be more reliable, he told the investigators that he had spent his day with Richard Loeb. The investigators kept on questioning them together and alone, and their alibi broke down. They had said that they were driving Leopold's car all day, when actually the chauffeur was fixing it- of course the chauffeur told the investigators this. They eventually ended up confessing to the murder of Robert Franks on May 31st.

Leopold and Loeb both were sentenced to Joliet prison for life plus ninety-nine years. They later were brought to Stateville Penitentiary. Because of how intelligent they were, they educated prisoners in the prison school.
